I have recently acquired 3 Sony Stereo IC Recorders.  Here are my ideas for implementation:

Podcasting

  • Podcasters could interview faculty members around school
  • Families can be a part of podcasts as they record their family history
  • Interviewing community leaders would be within reach
  • Reporting “live” on field trips, capturing the sounds of what they are seeing

In the classroom

  • Students recording themselves reading and then playing back.
  • Teachers can recite spelling words for students to practice (listening with the included earphones)
  • Centers can have a recorder to playback instructions for that activity

Communication

  • Students can take home recorded messages from teachers (in English or Spanish)
  • Co-Teachers can record thoughts to share with collaborating partners
  • Content Mastery Teachers can get detailed messages about assignments coming from General Ed teachers

These are just a few of the ideas running through my brain.  What are your thoughts?

I’m currently looking at the latest generation of mp4 player/recorders. I think your Sony is WAAAY over priced for what you’re getting. Still better (priced) than an Apple, although Apple does have some nifty features built into their latest players.

I see voice applications like yours where students can use it to review material. Having them make their own podcasts/notes will necessarily involve them becoming more intimate with the content. Also communicating with parents at home will be a big deal down the road. But with the addition of video, the possibilities REALLY take off. Sannse is currently selling nice mp4 players for around $60-$75 that also record voice or from the FM radio.

I did not price the recorders, but I am sure we spent more than we needed to. Our Special Ed department bought one for all of our diagnosticians to record ARD meetings and I asked for some. That’s how all of that went down.

I hope to incorporate video soon. Right now it is most cost effective for us to stick with audio, but it will not be long before video is part of our school culture.

I will look into the Sannse products.

I used one of Dave’s mp3 recorders and it was wonderful. I had my kids in two groups…one recording with the mp3 and the other recording on my computer with a mic. Unfortunately, the mic recording didn’t work and there was no way for us to redo the recording as my kids were interviewing a couple of gentlemen from a group called Team Impact. We lucked out in being able to get the guys to our classroom after their presentation, so asking them back would have been a little greedy.

But because the guys were still in town, I was able to redo the interview in another location using the mp3 recorder and will soon have to time to mesh it together with my kids asking the questions instead of me. Genius!

The possiblities are endless and if the Sannse are cheaper, I could possibly purchase one myself.

I can definately see it’s use in allowing students to stretch themselves to get quality content from home or other outside sources. It will also be very useful in helping kids obtain better oral language skills as well as a providing primary level teachers a simple and live record keeping system for students reading fluency progress.
